How I understand relationships
Most couples think they're fighting about the issue: money, chores, in-laws, sex, the kids. They're not. They're stuck in a pattern, and the pattern keeps playing out no matter the topic.
In one of our first sessions, I'll often get up and draw two simple ideas on the board: love and trust. Love is about identity: being known, wanted, valued, and belonging. Trust is about safety: openness, vulnerability, predictability, and fairness. None of us experienced those perfectly growing up. Those early wounds create deep feelings and coping behaviors, and over time they become our patterns. Restoration Therapy calls this the pain cycle.
Here's the shift that changes everything for most couples: your pattern didn't start with your partner. It existed long before you met. Your partner didn't create the cycle. They just became the person you do it with.
When couples understand that, something opens up. Instead of blaming each other, each person starts taking responsibility for how they show up. From there, couples can build a peace cycle: a way of relating grounded in the truth about who you are, and safety with each other.
How we work together
This isn't just about better communication skills. It's about building a fundamentally different relationship with yourself and with each other.
See the pattern, not just the problem. We step back from the latest argument and map the cycle you keep repeating together.
Understand what's driving it. Each of you names the deeper feelings underneath your reactions, and where they come from.
Take responsibility for your side. Instead of trying to change your partner, each of you learns to change how you show up.
Regulate and differentiate. You learn to calm yourself in hard moments, and to know where you end and your partner begins. You're not responsible for managing each other's emotions. That freedom is what makes real intimacy possible.
Practice the peace cycle. You leave sessions with concrete practices to use at home, because insight without practice is just information.
For couples, I usually recommend a 90-minute first session so we have time to understand both of your stories.
When one person's anxiety is fueling the conflict, individual work can help too. See Anxiety Therapy. If it's mostly about one partner learning to open up, see Therapy for Men.
Since opening my practice in 2011, I've worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and families. Couples work has been at the heart of that from the beginning.

That's okay. Let's go where the energy and initiative is. One person working on themselves can change a relationship and the whole system around it. I often tell clients that any individual therapy is marriage therapy.

Many approaches focus on communication skills. I focus on the pattern underneath your conflict, where it comes from, and how each of you can change your part of it. Better communication tends to follow.

It depends on what you're working on. Some couples need a handful of sessions; others work through something significant over six months to a year. I generally suggest committing to 6 to 12 sessions to start.
