“Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.”

Soren Kierkegaard | The Concept of Anxiety

Does this sound familiar?

  • Your mind won't shut off, especially at 2 a.m.

  • You replay conversations and rehearse the ones ahead.

  • Your chest feels tight, your stomach is in knots, or you can't catch your breath.

  • You over-prepare, over-function, and still feel behind.

  • You avoid things that used to be easy.

  • You're irritable with the people you love most, and you're not sure why.

  • On the outside you look fine. On the inside you're exhausted.

How I understand anxiety

Most approaches treat anxiety as a feeling to calm down. I see it differently. Anxiety is something we do: a way of coping when deeper needs feel threatened.

My work is grounded in Restoration Therapy, which centers on two core human needs: love and trust. Love tells us who we are: known, valued, and belonging. Trust tells us whether we are safe. When either has been wounded, in our families, relationships, or along the way, we feel unworthy or unsafe. Anxiety is often how we respond. We ruminate, control, over-prepare, or avoid.

That loop is what Restoration Therapy calls the pain cycle. Therapy helps you see your pain cycle clearly, name the deeper feelings driving it, and practice a different response. Over time you move into a peace cycle: living from the truth about who you are, with safety in your relationships.

Part of the work is learning to befriend your anxiety rather than fight it. We make space to encounter it and ask: is this anxiety here to harm me, or to help me? That discernment changes everything.

Kierkegaard saw anxiety as part of being human and free. I agree. The goal isn't a life without anxiety. It's learning to listen to what it's pointing to, without letting it run your life.

How we work together

Insight without practice is just information. Our work moves from understanding to real change.

  1. Reframe anxiety as an opportunity for growth. Instead of treating anxiety as an enemy to defeat, we approach it as a signal worth listening to, and an invitation to grow.

  2. Map your pattern. We identify what triggers your anxiety, what you feel underneath it, and what you do to cope.

  3. Get to the roots. We look at where those feelings come from, often old wounds to love and trust.

  4. Practice a new response. You learn concrete steps to interrupt the cycle in the moment, not just understand it afterward.

  5. Build it into your life. We turn new responses into daily practices that hold up under pressure.

Along with Restoration Therapy, I draw on:

  • EMDR, when anxiety is tied to painful past experiences that still feel present.

  • Contemplative practices that build attention, stillness, and a steadier relationship with your own mind.

Anxiety rarely stays contained to one person. It shapes marriages, parenting, and work. If anxiety is affecting your relationship, see Couples and Relationships. If you lead others, see Executive Coaching.

Anxiety has been at the center of my clinical, writing, and teaching work for more than 15 years. I'm certified in Restoration Therapy (Levels I and II) and trained in EMDR.
