Discipleship and Spiritual Formation. Difference?

Christianity Today posts a beauty of a discussion regarding the difference between discipleship and spiritual formation.

This discussion, with Dallas Willard and Richard Foster is great, and I believe they are articulating what many of us are thinking about, wondering about, and just have questions about, but are unable to articulate ourselves. Of course I could be speaking just for myself, but I don't think I am.

My favorite passage of the discussion/interview:

"You can't hope to accomplish in 40 days what it takes 40 years to do. There has to be a willingness for barren day after barren day after barren day, a willingness for new forms of worship, new forms of living."

Yep, that is one of the crucial quotes for me, too. I'm as into instant gratification as the next person, and yet the very nature of discipleship is antithetical to any quick result program. Which means a lot of frustration. :)

This reminds of G.K. Chesterton's line that Christianity has not been so much been tried and been found wanting, but rather Christianity has been found difficult and left untried.

I'm grateful for Willards, Fosters and Bolsingers who remind us of grace, the joy of the fruit of discipline, and the need to do this in community.
